It's finally happened. College students have produced so many tracks equal to or better than those by professional a cappella groups that a BOCA can rival the best pop/rock pro CDs. Kicking off this killer collection of current music is Brandeis VoiceMale in your face on Robbie Williams' "Let Me Entertain You." The emotional intensity of these songs is immense, from the Evanescence megahit "Bring Me To Life" (sung by Johns Hopkins Octopodes) to the power ballad "Always," to the pair of Tori Amos tunes, "Winter" and "China." The influence of digital production techniques is ever-present; in fact, two producers (Gabe Rutman and Bill Hare) were connected in some way to half of the tracks. And a few of the songs are on the hairy edge of what might be considered a cappella, especially the techno closing track, "Enjoy The Silence." But the creativity of student singers is always the highlight - this BOCA includes an original tune, astonishing "Gravity" by Sara Bareilles of UCLA's Awaken A Cappella. This is by far the best BOCA ever, and maybe one of the best contemporary a cappella CDs ever as well! (78:09 2004)
