This CD is a collection of Northern Harmony's repertoire performed on their 2002 tour. Featuring music by contemporary composers like Neely Bruce (shape-note tradition "There is a June when corn is cut," lyrical "All these my banners be" and beautiful Shaker treble piece "Help me o Lord") and Toby Tenenbaum (the title track is a rousing parallel-fifth-filled anthem, "Let the beauty we love" is more meditative, and "Music Master" is filled with inventive harmonies). There are also songs from Bulgaria that tell tales of young love, fear, and traditions. The different timbre of the chorus when performing thes Bulgarian songs, as well as the Georgian songs on the album, is quite remarkable, but very indigenous to the style(s). Where the voices were sweet and subtle before, they take on a strident (but very in tune) tone with the eastern European repertoire. They accompany themselves on some of these pieces, with accordion, drums, recorders and other instruments native to the region(s).("Zamruknalo mi momiche" is this reviewer's favorite.) Another great recording by this group of wonderful young singers, under the direction of Patty Cuyler and Larry Gordon, Northern Harmony's founders.
