Jewish contemporary a cappella is a niche within a niche within a niche - but it is growing, and judging by the high quality of this extremely impressive compilation, it has "arrived." Jordan Gorfinkel (Beat'achon) produced this compilation and has every right to be proud: the singing is great, the array of groups is impressive, and the liner notes lend a professional air to the concept of contemporary Jewish a cappella. Jordan brought in some well-known names - Sean Altman and Jeff Thacher - to help out on production, vocal percussion (in places), singing and arranging. Sean and Jeff (of Rockapella fame, past and current) assisted on a number of the 10 tracks that debut on this compilation - in itself a rare and marvelous treat. Up-and-comer Mike Boxer (ICCA champs Binghamton Crosby's, Varsity Vocal Scholarship recipient) contributes as part of Six13 as well as on his own. Other artists include Kol Zimra, Beat'achon, and performers not previously known to us: Yehuda!, Lev Tahor, Ophie Nat and more. Jammed full of music, both traditional melodies (with a pop/rock twist) and original tunes, this CD is a major milestone in the development of Jewish a cappella. (74:26 2005)
