Chapter 6 is growing up! This album highlights the arranging skills of group member Mark Grizzard, and what skills they are! All but three of the 12 songs are arranged by Grizzard, and his jazz influences really come through on tunes like opener "Sleigh Ride," which starts out pretty straight but breaks into a jazzy, walking-bass finish. Vince Guaraldi's 'Charlie Brown' classic "Christmas Time is Here" is smooth with a contemporary R & B flavor (check out the sexy VP in the background). You'll hardly recognize "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" done a la m-pact in a crisp jazz style. "Away in a Manger," "Gabriel's Message," "The First Noel" and "Carol of the Bells" are the only songs on the album that don't quite seem to "fit" with the style of the other, hipper tunes - these are traditional arrangements. But they come back with Michael Engelhardt's funky/groovy "Rise Up Shepherd and Follow." And smooth, jazzy album closer "White Christmas" makes it all end with a smile. We're anxious to see how this group continues to evolve! (39:01 2003)
