The name of this CD commands us to "Experience the Music of Paul Ayres," and experience his broad range of talent you will if you give it a listen. The CD is a live recording of a concert in 1999 at St. James Church, with Paul Ayres directing the Queldryk Chamber Choir. The performance includes Paul Ayres music for fourth century Russian Orthodox text ("Strengthen), and for 19th and 20th century poetry ("To Music" - Hopkins, "Treasure" - Struthers) to arrangements for traditional spirituals ("Didn't my Lord deliver Daniel?") and ballads ("Scarborough Fair"). Two of Ayres's own compositions are included (the "Motivations")and some jazzy arrangements, including one for the Gershwins'"Slap that Bass." Every piece has Ayres' stamp, much of it a touch avant garde and less accessible than many other well-known arrangers and music writers.
