Winner of the 2003 "World Album of the Year" in the Canadian Independent Music Awards! Madrigaïa is a women's sextet based in Winnipeg, singing music from around the world. Their debut self-titled release is mostly a cappella (five of the 16 tracks have some instrumentation, but mostly percussion), and all good. With a repertoire that ranges from the Serbian Romany "Niska Banja" to the French "En filant ma quenouille" and the Mic Mac "Vichten," they cover much of the globe. If you like good worldbeat that explores one planet in just over 45 minutes, grab this disc. (46:16 2002)
