From incredibly tight jazz scat to kickin' vocal percussion solos, arrangements that are fresh and complex and a great vocal blend - these guys do it all. Their personal and musical intelligences shine in their choice of repertoire (including pieces pairing words and music by Antonio Jobim with vocalese written by group members Naomi Crellin and Nick Begbie) and the fresh way they make familiar songs their own. Their cover of Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely" is definitely that (check out the "scratchy record" effect at the very beginning - very appropriate), with beautiful vocals and a great jazz bridge. Their tradition of covering traditional spirituals continues with "His Eye is On the Sparrow" in a smooth pop/gospel style that features the solo chops of both the men and women of the group.
Musician buddies make appearances as well, with David Jones on drums on the sophisticated Thelonious Monk title tune "Evidence," and James Morrison (who also appeared on 'The Sum of Us') on flugelhorn in Gershwin's "But Not for Me." "Simple Sadie" is a traditional jazz bug's paradise, with quick, tight scat and great solo improv work. Soprano Trish Delaney-Brown and alto Naomi Crellin's voices mesh so well. Nick Begbie's sweet baritone enhances that sound, and Andrew Piper's solid bass foundation can be both anchor and hull, as he keeps up with all the activity above. Along with all the buzz, they can also get contemplative, with introspective gems like Trish's evocative original "Simple Feast" and Andrew's smooth arrangement of Jobim's "Corcovado." Lots of fun is had on "Just Kidding" with a scorching scat solo by Naomi and a killer VP break by Andrew. "We Will Find a Way" mixes a great hook with some neat wah-wah vocal guitar effects - I dare you not to snap your fingers, bob your head and shake your booty to this wonderful album. (47:52 2004)
