If you like the ultra-smooth sound of The Blenders, jazzy arrangements of The Real Group and m-pact (including a beautiful adaptation of Marco Cassone's "Do You Hear What I Hear"), and a sense of humor, then you'll LOVE this album! This jazz/pop/vocal band sextet from Singapore have it all - their vocals are incredibly blended, their solo performances are top-notch, the production work on this album rivals the best we've heard in the a cappella community - it's hard to find a negative. Together since 1997, they have established themselves on the worldwide a cappella scene (earning a CARA nomination for Best Holiday Song in 2002) with their classy, funky, refreshing sound. Opening "Jingle Bells" takes bits from a few different Christmas classics and mixes them all together quite nicely. Boy-band ballad "Quando" is top 40 radio-worthy; "The Christmas Song" is as smooth and welcome as hot chocolate on a cold winter day. With their unique talent for taking something familiar and making it their own, Vocaluptuous takes "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" and injects it with an opening from Seal's "Kiss From a Rose" and a rhythmic variety that totally works! And I bet you never thought "Silent Night" and "Stand by Me" go together, calypso-style - but they do here! This is a wonderful album, holiday repertoire notwithstanding, and should be a part of every vocal music enthusiast's collection. (34:39 2003)
