The release in 1963 of the Swingle Singers' first album, devoted to Bach, was an immediate success and certainly contributed to the discover of the Cantor's works by new audiences. Founded in Paris by Ward Swingle, this famous ensemble at that time comprised seven musicians whose famous doo-bi-doos, wordless and without orchestral backing, brought out both the extraordinary rhythmic quality and the sublime simplicity of Bach's music. They very soon branched out from this format to take in other kinds of repertoire, from Mozart to Luciano berio and from Ennio Mooricone to jazz. Enthusiastically praised by Yehudi Menuhin, Dizzy Gillespie and Ella Fitzgerald, the Swingle Singers were soon giving acclaimed world tours, even appearing at the White House. When the French group broke up, a new ensemble saw the light of day in England in 1973; today, still active, it has eight young London musicians full of enthusiasm and spontaneity, who appear with unfailing success in the great concert halls and alongside the best orchestras. Their vast and varied repertoire, including over three thousand arrangements, and definitely more "jazzy" these days, gives them the scope to perform all kinds of music.
