Okay - they use drum tracks. Big deal. The Nylons did it. Did it hurt their a cappella creds? Maybe. Will it hurt Tonic Sol-fa's? Maybe. But there's no doubt that these boys from Minnesota have songwriting chops (nine out of ten tracks are originals), a warm, round sound and a great sense of what makes a good pop song. Produced by Darren Rust, the lyrics on this one are a little wiser, a little more mature than on their last album. "Virginia" is a great pop song with a tasty little groove, the Elvis cover of "A Little Less Conversation" has a great solo that conveys lots of soul, but the background is a little too polished. It's a little too "clean" to be convincing. Rust's definitive style is most noticeable in "Take Me Away" - the opening few bars just scream "Blenders" (which is not necessarily a bad thing). Drumtrackless "Sweet Time" is a hummable, Eagles-ish original about thankfulness. Drum tracks? Don't give up on Tonic Sol-Fa yet. (32:50 2003).
