Mediterranean Sounds: Croatia's Mystic Voices: Klapa Luka (2007 CD)
Be the first to review this product
Klapa Luka, the a cappella women's vocal group from Rijeka, weaves into its songs the echoes of fates from all ages, like a magical mirror. The choral lines, molten with the changes of space and time, create an impression of singing as though in the wake of a passing ship, anticipating the amplitudes of storms and dawns. The sounds of the sea and the shore flood disquiet like an engraved sign of eternal seafaring. Voices hover, touching all the well-loved scenes whose remembrance time cannot erase, and these voices transform longings into nostalgic sounds that echo in the songs of the homeland...The authentic voices of the first women's klapa from Rijeka connect all the seas of the world, bringing into intimate spaces the images wrestled away from time. (Description taken from the liner notes.)
Recorded in surround sound on October 6-9, 2003 in the church of St. Georg, Trsat, Rijeka, Croatia. This project is supported by the Ministry of Culture, Republic of Croatia, European distribution by Dallas Records (http://www.dallas.hr). Mediterranean Sounds: Croatia's Mystic Voices: Klapa Fa Lindo (2005 CD)

"The joyful voices of the women who make up Klapa FA Lindo truly embrace a large swath of the Medterranean: their harmony unites the heights of the skies with the blue depths of the sea. As their song bursts forth from the city walls, the entire world unfolds before them. Music lovers are immediately seduced, and with their initial surprise turning to enchantment, they inevitably inquire about the singers' place of origin. That place is Dubrovnik, Croatia, a city whose special character and unique surroundings have endowed the singers' voices with the softness of silk and the pungent aroma of the local flora...." (Taken from the very comprehensive liner notes. Liners are translated into seven different languages.)

About klapa singing:
The klapa style of singing, a Croatian vocal phenomenon from the Dalmation coast that originated in the middle of the 19th century, has undergone dynamic changes over the past 20 years. The greatest single change in the klapa movement has been the emergence of the new tradition of women's klapas. The growth of this new tradition can be followed from its first appearance in 1967, at the Festival of Dalmation Vocal Groups in Omnis, to 1991, when the women's klapa festival was inaugurated.
Women's klapas inherited from men's klapas the structure and the repertoire and the styles; upon this basis, they evolved a definite female style of singing. In doing so, the women's groups hve proven that they deserve the special name klapa, which their male predecessors have guarded so jealously. (Description taken from the liner notes.)

Mediterranean Sounds: Croatia's Mystic Voices: Klapa Navalia (2007 CD)
Be the first to review this product
"Klapa Navalia" represents the rich tradition of Easter singing in Novalja on the island of Pag, the fifth largest island in the Adriatic Sea. Although the majority of the songs are rendered in the modern polyphonic klapa manner of traditional male singing, their basis is actually the archaic choral matrix known as Glagolitic chant. This ancient tradition, which dates from as far back as the 12th century, is carried on by vocalists without formal training, grouped in folk ensembles of various sizes, who sing according to the musical paradigms passed on by oral transmission from previous generations.
Klapa Navalia simultaneously continues the traditions of local archaiec singing and adapts these traditions to the current manner of music making, thereby preserving the national and regional identity- and, especially, the spiritual and cultural identity - of its native region, the island of Pag." (Description taken from the beautiful and comprehensive liner notes, transkated into seven different languages.)

Mediterranean Sounds: Croatia's Mystic Voices: Klapa Sinj: Lipo Ime (2005 CD)

"It is as if this sound emerged from the very bowels of the Earth, only to rise up and reveal the heavens. This sound sings of a timeless age when the beauty of the landscape and the trials of history combined to beget music, not unlike the symphony of human voices that celebrated the birth of harmony. But these mystical voices need neither instruments nor written music to summon the forgotten language, to commence reciting the songs to the souls of those yet unborn and to the speechless heads of stone that populate the facades of our churches. This is a sound that is unafraid of its own silences, courageous enough to test fate as its harkmonies ascend the walls of the stone cities along the sea. It is a sound that embodies the promise of a new, undiscovered, mysterious beauty from beyond the boundaries of human knowledge, a beauty that hails from the cradle of creation. That is the song that is uncoverign the threads of myth on the immemorial face of the earth in order to make an offering on the altar of history: the sound of verse and the beauty of 'Our Beautiful*.'
*"Our Beautiful" are the first two words of the Croatian national anthem, and Croatians throughout the world refer to their homeland as 'Our Beautiful.'" (Description taken from the beautiful and comprehensive liner notes, which include translations into seven different languages.)
Recorded in surround sound on October 15, 2003 in the church of the Miraculous Lady of Sinj, in Sinj, Croatia. All songs are sung in the native Croatian language, with English translations in the CD jacket.
