In this CD, Anonymous 4 departs from their traditional a cappella, early music style. This nonetheless lovely recording of Celtic and British songs and carols features harp (Irish, Baroque and psaltery) by Andrew Lawrence-King on about half the songs, like "I Saw Three Ships" and "The Cherry Tree Carol" (plus he goes instrument-only on another three tracks). Their all-vocal pieces include very modern "The Lamb" by John Tavener, equally modern "Balulalow" by Richard Rodney Bennett and a debut recording of Peter Maxwell Davies' "A Calendar of Kings." More in keeping with what one expects from Anonymous 4 is sweet "The Holly and the Ivy" and "Grene growth the holy" by Henry VII. Different, but marvelous in its diversity! (66:17 2003)
