Saint Nicholas lived somewhere around modern day Turkey during the 2nd Century AD, and 500 years later, his exploits were celebrated across Europe with songs, legends and eventually plainchants and polyphonic songs. Anonymous 4 has diligently gathered some of these together for this fine collection of early music. Not only are these four women scholars, but they sing a pretty good plainchant as well. Fans and newcomers alike will enjoy this set of songs dedicated to the legends of St. Nicholas, and performed lovingly. Highlights include "Nicholai Presulis," a song calling the people to celebrate St. Nicholas day with songs, ornaments and gift-giving, and "Cum Quidam Fluctuantia," about him saving a ship from a stormy sea. Also noteworthy is "Sainte Nicholaes," in invocation of a blessing from St. Nicholas for a safe sea journey. Every piece is exquisitely sung.
