Black Voices: Sisters Let's Talk (CD)

This group of highly talented British women bring us another collection of great performances, varying in style from reggae to jazz, calypso to traditional South African songs. Their sound is reminscent of Sweet Honey in the Rock (especially with their incredibly low bass!), but they do have their own well-established presence. "I Know I' Been Changed" is a gospel/spiritual fete that shows you just how much soul these ladies have, and what they can do with it. Opening cut "Jamming" will definitely get you moving; light drums accompany that tune as well as jazzy improv "Evening Stroll" and "Reggae Mix," a combination of folk tunes from Caribbean and African traditions. We dare you to stay in your seats for their rousing version of "O When the Saints" - can you say revival?? South African traditional "Ntyilo Ntyilo" shows, in its simplicity, just how beautiful these womens' voices truly are. A full, round, soulful sound is their trademark, and they do not disappoint on this, their fifth album. (36:32 2003)
