The Café of the Gate of Salvation is an exciting a cappella (unaccompanied) choir inspired by the African-American vocal tradition: the passionate, committed and exciting music of gospel and spirituals. This unusual aggregation of souls first collected in 1986, under the direction of Tony Backhouse...

Since then the Café has performed almost continuously, appearing at such diverse events as Womadelaide, Horizons, Melbourne International Festival and other prestigious festivals, and for Nelson Mandela's 1990 Australian visit. In 1999, the Café did a tour of the United States, and sang, to much acclaim, in churches in Harlem, New York, Birmingham, Alabama, and New Orleans.
