This 2002 compilation by Collegium Records brings together 25 career-spanning Christmas offerings. Most tunes were composed by him (delightfully uplifting "Star Carol," the 5/8 meter "Donkey Carol," "Shepherd's Pipe Carol"), some are traditional carols re-worked and infused with that Rutter magic (Irish traditional "The Wexford Carol," "Dormi, Jesu," Rosetti's "Love Came Down at Christmas" "I Saw Three Ships" and, of course, "Silent Night"). The soaring nature of Rutter's eternally enjoyable melodies, along with the skillful song selection and track order, provide a wonderful telling of the Christmas story. The London Sinfonia provides light accompaniment on most of the tracks, only two of which are totally a cappella.(78:07 2002)
