Chanticleer does it all on this CD and they do it all very, very well. "A Portrait" is a compilation of pieces taken from previous Teldec recordings of Chanticleer. The listener is taken on a musical history lesson starting with "Ave Marie", a Gregorian Chant sung in perfect unison, and ending with "Christmas Time is Here" from "A Charlie Brown Christmas", sung with charming sincerity. In between, "Wherewithal, Shall a Young Man" is dark and profound, "Labbra Vermiglie E Belle" is beautifully mysterious. I don't know when we've heard a lovelier rendition of "Shenandoah". This all male ensemble shows they can sing music from any period with feeling and understanding. If you already have all of Chanticleer's CDs this is not for you, but if you are looking for an introduction to one of the premier singing ensembles in the world, "A Portrait" would be perfect.
