Chanticleer: Tavener - Lamentations & Praise
Be the first to review this product
This modern "liturgical drama" is based on a series of Ikons from the Russian and Greek Orthodox traditions, depicting the events after the death of Christ, from Golgotha to an excursion in Hades to rescue Adam and Eve, in three separate cycles. Chanticleer rises to the challenge of reproducing the Eastern singing style that Tavener demanded here. The work is scored for male voices, flute, bass trombone, string quartet and percussion instruments including timpani, Byzantine monastery bell, Tibetan temple bowl and tubular bells. The keening lament of the "Thrinos" reverberates with the pure sounds of Chanticleer's vocalists. The bass drones in each "Epitaphios" will send chills down your spine. Sung all in English, this is a beautiful, somber yet musically uplifiting piece of choral literature.
