This wonderful, mostly a cappella Christmas album springs first from the King's Singers' own experiences of carol services in their childhood. Thus, the recording in a church knave with a pair of microphones; thus, including standards such as "Coventry Carol" and Praetorius' "Es ist ein Ros' entsprungen" ("Lo How a Rose" sung in its original German). But the King's Singers are well-rounded and worldly musicians, so they include much more. Their own Philip Lawson updates "Veni, veni Emmanuel" and "Noël nouvelet" but also contributes a new carol "Lullay my liking." They also pick up compositions by John Taverner ("The Lamb"), Peter Warlock, John McCabe, John Rutter ("There Is A Flower"), Arvo Pärt and Bo Holten. They close with a new set of lyrics appropriate for Christmas for their signature piece, "You Are A New Day," here as "Born on a New Day," complete with string quartet accompaniment (the only instruments on the CD other than a drum cameo). The splendid set is performed with exquisite nuance, as King's Singers fans have come to expect.(70:34 2003)

""There is a Flower" is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard - I've been playing it nearly continuously for the last 3 days. The baritone soloist's voice has a wonderful character, and the ensemble is impeccable (as expected). I looked for the sheet music version from Hal Leonard, but no joy. This must be one of the tunes that Paul Phoenix (one of their tenors) described as something only available to the King's Singers (either because of its difficulty or because of its distinctiveness)."
