Choral music lovers will definitely warm up to this fine recording of innovative repertoire, starting with the first of many Steven Sametz pieces (over half the program!), a lively arrangement of "Chace No. 3" (which includes handbells and a countertenor solo). His stunning piece for a cappella chorus and soprano solo, "There Is No Rose of Such Virtue" may well become a standard over the years, with its shimmeringly mysterious sound. Biebl's "Ave Maria" is already such a standard, and increasingly so is Charles Ives' "A Christmas Carol." The small chorus sound of the Princeton Singers (26 listed singers)is a happy medium between small ensembles a la Chanticleer and larger choruses. The liner notes generously provide translations where needed. (63:10 2001)
