Rajaton: Out of Bounds (CD)

This 2006 release by Finnish septet Rajaton brings together some tunes that appeared on earlier albums, but they've been re-arranged, feature guest artists or just generally "freshened up" for this release.
Beautiful opening track "Dobbin's Flowery Vale" originally appeared on 2001's "Boundless", but has since been revamped by group friend Matti Kallio. Its wordless, haunting Irish folk melody weaves its way into your consciousness and takes root there; "Un-Wishing Well" is also a repeat performance from "Boundless", but it's still a great Latin-flavored, humorous number; "Butterfly" and "We Walk in a Fog" are also from "Boundless," but they bring in guests on the latter - namely Swedish jazz heavy hitters The Real Group - oh yeah, it's good.
There are encores from "Kevät" like "Soila Sariola" and Stephen Hatfield's "Vanishing Act," "Salty Water" and "Snow," and even one from "Nova" - Finnish folk "Mitä kaikatat, kivonen?" The debuts here include some really good stuff too - Michael McGlynn (of Anuna) wrote "The Wild Song" for the group in 2000, (but Anuna recorded it first); gorgeous Sting cover "I Was Brought to My Senses" as arranged by tenor Hannu Lepola and jazzy pop "How Little" all add to the album's enjoyment factor. If you're not familiar with the group, this is a great place to start. If you are, and would like to pick this one up to round out your Rajaton collection, you will not be disappointed. (44:49 2006)

"These guys surprise you! Want some classical? Want some pop? What some jazz? They can do it. I'm still listening to the CD and finding new things. "Mita kaikatat, kivonen?" is a clever folkish song. "Snow" arranged by Anders Edenroth of the Real Group is one of my favs, as is "Salty Water." The group does a great job of featuring every member in their group, so you hear them featured a few times or more, and they are all awesome. I strongly recommend this for any vocal jazz library!"
