Ward Swingle writes:

"Robert Schumann wrote these 13 short 'scenes' describing the everday events of a child's life in a most affectionate way. The 'scenes' should go from one to the other with a very short pause. One of my most cherished memories was hearing Walter Gieseking play the Scenes of Childhood at one of his Saarbrchen Master Classes in the early 50's."
