In the beginning there was Bach, Ward, and a rhythm section... the beginning of the Swingle Singers, of course. Their 1963 Grammy sound is reproduced on this 40th Anniversary live CD (remember that the Swingles aren't mere mortals, and can perform with equal perfection live and in the studio). Along with Bach, there's some Mozart (four movements of "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik"), some Spanish romantic composers (Rodrigo and Albeniz), then some jazz standards as originally performed by "Swingle II" in the 1970s ("Just One Of Those Things" and "Fascinatin' Rhythm"). They close with a studio recording of a brand new piece by French composer Pascal Zavaro, who has been collaborating with the group since 1999. This piece alone is worth the price of admission: a 21st century choral work that takes full advantage of the singers' virtuosity. Very cool! (57:19 2004)

"When the Swingle Singers hit the stage in the 60's they were great. Lots' of classical stuff done very well to "Doo be doo" etc. This album seems a bit overdone to me and the intonation of the group is not spectacular. "
