Blue Cheese's second CD shows a maturing in their vocal sound, their production skills and their arrangements. Even when dealing with relatively simple basic harmonic structure, as in many of these gospel hymns, they inject just enough of their own style to keep them fresh, but not so much that you can't recognize the old chestnut that is the basis of the song. Their repertoire choice is well-balanced, moving seamlessly from old-timey, up-tempo favorites like "Reaping in the Spirit" and "Roll Back the Stone" to minor key heart-string tuggers like "Death Shall Not Destroy My Comfort" (check out that bass!). Old-time tunes aren't the only thing on here, though - some contemporary gospel tunes like "(Jesus' Love is) Like a River" also take a turn - but it seems to be what they excel at. "Christmas Train" just rings with revival energy (as well as amuses with some cute lyrics and musical snippet insertions), as does "We'll Soon Be Done." And what bluegrass album would be complete with a rendition of "I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow"? This one's got a rollickin' bass line that sounds like it could come right off a Ike & Tina Turner record, though.

If you're a fan of bluegrass gospel, and enjoy a cappella singing, this is the Reese's peanut butter cup for you - "two great tastes that go great together"!

About Blue Cheese: Blue Cheese was formed in 2003 when two choir conductors from Brigham Young University got together to perform "Some Day" by Blue Highway. They searched among their musically talented friends until they felt they had formed the perfect quartet. The group continues to perform their foot-stompin', soul-stirrin' music in the semiannual BYU A Cappella Jam and in venus along the Wasatch Front for crowds who know how to shout "HALLELUJAH!"
