Cantus: ...Against the Dying of the Light
Be the first to review this product
Cantus delivers here their most artistically coherent recording to date, a very impressive collection of mostly modern pieces centered around the theme of death. These are not lamentations, though; their spirit is centered on the Dylan Thomas poem from which the CD title is drawn: "rage against the dying of the light". St. Olaf Choir's Kenneth Jennings supplies the setting for the two Dylan Thomas poems. There are also works by Orff (spirited "Sunt Lacrimae Rerum"), Pablo Casals ("O Vos Omnes"), a dark piece by Veljo Tormis that translates to "God Protect Us From War", and pieces by Sibelius, Schubert, Debussy and Barber. Their bold programming is matched by intense, flawless singing. In addition, the packaging includes a translation of all lyrics, set as poetry. This is a powerful album sure to appeal to all fans of contemporary "serious" music.
