This beautiful holiday release from Massachusetts' Gloria Dei Cantores features not only their vocal ensemble, but the Gloria Dei Artes Instrumental Ensemble, The Gloria Dei Ringers, and the Gloria Dei Brass Ensemble. All of these groups have toured the world extensively, and are very highly accomplished musicians. The CD is made up of newly recorded and previously recorded pieces, beginning with a collection of carols arranged by Ralph Hunter. The orchestral accompaniment is just lovely on all pieces, staying loyal to the text and supportive of the vocals above it. The album also offers arrangements by William Billings ("The Shepherd's Carol"), David Willcocks ("Sussex Carol"), Alfred Burt ("The Star Carol," "Caroling, Caroling")and John Rutter ("Ding, Dong! Merrily on High"). An uplifting, celebratory offering to get you in the spirit of the season. (70:15 1999)
