Vox Concordia: Making Notes (CD)
Be the first to review this product
This is a gorgeous recording, folks. This British octet has friends in very cool a cappella places - like Jonathan Rathbone and Joanna Forbes and Alexander L'Estrange (of the Swingle Singers) - as well as a veritable plethora of other a cappella jazz and barbershop connections. Their members include "a classically trained soprano, no fewer than four national barbershop quartet champions, experienced cabaret performers and even a dentist," singing modern pop tunes, Christmas carols, jazz standards and even some stand-up comedy to boot! As the group says on their site: "If you've ever heard the Swingle Singers, Singers Unlimited, Liberty Voices or the Voices of Lee then you'll know what to expect from us." That's pretty good company to keep, don't you think?
And they keep it well, folks. The skill of these singers is evident on this, their debut recording. But they're pros, and it shows! Standouts include "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square," Swingles arrangement of The Austin Powers them "Soul Bossa Nova" (groovy, babyyy), and a powerful version of "All Rise," made 'famous' by Voices of Lee and Four Voices. "When She Loved Me" from Toy Story 2 is sweet as can be, and they definitely stretch their jazz chops on "It Don't Mean a Thing." The CD is quality singing at its best, and a fitting tribute to the arrangers that they choose to honor here. Pick this one up - you will NOT be disappointed!
Nominated for the Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards (CARA) Best Jazz Album 2007!
