Like Steinway did for the piano, Robert Shaw defined what a chorus ought to sound like. His early 60's group remains, for me, the "gold standard" for small chorus singing. For balance, clarity, diction, beautiful shape to phrases, they have no peer today. These folks were grownups, with a richly mature sound that many of today's over-controlled groups would do well to emulate ...if they can. For this outing Shaw used only his men, and they sound absolutely fabulous in these wonderfully imaginative arrangements that powerfuly evoke the era of which they are singing: lusty, hardworking, sentimental. I have loved this recording since I was but a tad, and there are not enough stars for it. If you love GREAT singing, buy it RIGHT NOW.
