Comments:
The shape note tradition encompasses both choral part-singing and folk idioms. This recording delights, getting the balance right. The chorus sings well with good intonation, musical phrasing and clean ensemble, but avoiding a too-cultivated sound. They offer enough "twang" and and rough-and-ready quality to be true to the music's roots, but don't go overboard (as some other groups do) to sound harsh or boorish. It's a great portrait of communal singing in American music history, perfect as an introduction to shape-note performance and essential for any American choral collector or enthusiast.
