" What are 4 guys from Fargo doing singing Motown? "

As a long time Blenders fan (thanks Amy Briggs!), I've become accustomed to that sweet blend and overtones these guys have brought to us in the past. "Aunt Sue's Ant Soup" is on my permanent rotation for my daily rollerblading jaunt. Now, I think I'll be adding a bunch of these tracks to that playlist as well.
At first I thought, "what could four dudes from snow country know about soul music?" The first thing I noticed was how tight the accompaniment is. Accompaniment?? On a Blenders CD? What the? It works. The rhythm section is SO close to the original, you would swear it were the same musicians from those old recordings.
I've been listening to these charts for the past 5 days straight and it's enjoyable. I'm not jumping up and down, dancing 'round the house as I have with other albums, but if this caught my attention long enough for me to continue listening for 5 days straight, something is definitely working. As a musician, I notice certain things - like the only signature Blenders sounds I've heard are the "whoa" or "aww" chords that are interspersed throughout. The only reason I gave this album a '4' was because I would've LOVED to hear them do ONE of these charts a cappella, using their amazing vocal percussion and production gimmicks as previously used. Maybe one day when they FINALLY come to NY to do a show, they'll do one like that and specifically say to me, "SO THERE!!"
I do understand that the public wants to hear certain songs like these, done as true to the pioneering recording as possible. But with all the talent these guys possess, a few could've been done as a signature Blenders arrangement. Nonetheless, all these tracks are equally artistic and I say kudos to those fine boys!
